What's the difference between AHA, PHA, and BHA?Updated 9 days ago

AHA, BHA and PHA are all types of exfoliating acids.

AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) and water-soluble acids that work mainly on the surface of the skin to break the ‘glue’ between old skin cells and hence resurface the skin. AHAs are best for dullness, texture, fine lines and hyperpigmentation. PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) are similar to AHAs but are much larger, meaning that they penetrate the skin more slowly and are therefore better for sensitive skins.

BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) is an oil-soluble exfoliating acid. The only BHA used in skincare is salicylic acid. Thanks to its oil solubility, BHA can penetrate the skin deeper than AHAs, and it works by exfoliating the pore lining, therefore helping with blackheads, congestion and breakouts.
